I stood in our kitchen reading Rachel\u2019s animal rescue newsletter when she walked in from a tense phone call with her sister. \u201cLana and Chris are drowning financially,\u201d she sighed. Their credit cards were maxed out, they\u2019d sold their car to pay debt, and now needed another one. I wasn\u2019t surprised. Rachel and I saved carefully for our future. Lana and Chris spent money like consequences didn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n
That night Rachel curled beside me with her \u201cI want something\u201d smile. \u201cWe should help Lana out,\u201d she said. \u201cMaybe four or five thousand.\u201d I nearly choked. \u201cNo, Rachel. I\u2019m not sacrificing our future because your sister refuses to budget.\u201d She snapped: \u201cThis is FAMILY.\u201d Three days later, while checking our accounts, I saw $2,000 missing from our savings. Rachel admitted she\u2019d given it to Lana behind my back \u2014 for \u201cstuff\u201d for their new car.<\/p>\n
The next morning I moved our savings into separate accounts. Rachel still had her own money, just not access to the savings anymore. Three days later Rachel finally called. Her voice sounded small this time. \u201cLana asked if I could ask you again\u2026 they need more money.\u201d I closed my eyes. \u201cMaybe they shouldn\u2019t have blown the first two thousand on car accessories.\u201d Long silence.
