There was a twelve-year-old kid on my son\u2019s rec league soccer team who always stuck around long after the fields emptied out. While the other parents lined up in their SUVs, this boy would stay behind after every single practice, tirelessly kicking the ball against the chain-link fence entirely by himself. His parents both worked late shifts and there was simply nobody available to pick him up for another hour, so he just kept at it, passing the time in the fading light.<\/p>\n
Our coach quickly picked up on the situation. Instead of packing up his gear and driving home to his own family, Coach started staying behind too. He didn\u2019t run grueling extra drills or act like a demanding trainer; he just made sure the kid wasn\u2019t left out there alone. Some days they would kick the ball back and forth across the grass, and other days Coach would just sit quietly on the wooden bench nearby, catching up on work but keeping a watchful eye out.<\/p>\n
He did this three times a week for the entire duration of the season. The investment paid off in more ways than one: the kid\u2019s skills skyrocketed, and he successfully made varsity the following year at his middle school. <\/p>\n
