A Georgia cattle farmer named Gene King faced a frustrating bureaucratic hurdle when the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rejected his application for an interstate transport license. The reason? His home address included the town’s actual name: Gay, Georgia.<\/p>\n
When King tried to obtain a required Premises Number to buy and sell cattle across state lines, his application was repeatedly flagged by the system. USDA representatives informed him that the town’s name triggered an automated filter in their older IT software, which blocked it as an “offensive word.”<\/p>\n
Instead of fixing the database, the USDA suggested a workaround: King should simply change his hometown on the official government application from “Gay” to “Bay.” King firmly refused, stating that he wanted to submit his actual address where he legally lives.<\/p>\n
Following media attention, the USDA explained that the database and its list of restricted words were created in the early 2000s for a national animal identification system.
