An ordinary summer afternoon ended in tragedy for an Illinois family on July 3, 2026, when 8-year-old Kinslee Tschida was struck by lightning while playing with her cousins in the backyard of her home in Serena. The children had been outside when adults heard thunder and told them to leave the swing set and head indoors, with the house only about 20 feet away.<\/p>\n
According to Kinslee\u2019s grandfather, Chris Scheib, the girl was climbing down from the swing when the lightning suddenly struck. He said there appeared to be virtually no warning, and the bolt came just moments before she could have reached the safety of the house. Family members immediately rushed to help Kinslee. Her mother, a registered nurse, and other relatives performed CPR before emergency responders arrived. Kinslee was taken to OSF St. Elizabeth Hospital in Ottawa, where she was later pronounced dead.
