In February 2017, Florida passerby Ashad Russell, 35, was formally cleared of criminal charges after shooting and killing 53-year-old Edward Strother during an alleged attack on Lee County Sheriff\u2019s Deputy Dean Bardes on Interstate 75. Authorities said Strother had pinned and repeatedly punched the deputy during a traffic stop, and Russell intervened after seeing the struggle, warning Strother to stop before firing three shots.
