Three teenagers died after a black Audi A3 carrying four young people plunged into the River Wear at Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland. A 17-year-old boy escaped from the sinking vehicle and reached the riverbank before being taken to hospital, while two teenage boys and a teenage girl were killed despite a major rescue operation involving divers and other emergency crews. The surviving teenager was later arrested as police investigated the circumstances of the crash, although his arrest does not by itself establish responsibility. Flowers were later left at the scene as the community mourned the three victims, while investigators worked to determine what happened in the moments before the Audi entered the river….
