A Mother’s Love..

At 5AM on a Saturday, my coworker called, shaking, asking me to watch her 4-year-old because she had a job interview out of town. She never returned. On Monday, I found her apartment unlocked and a note saying she couldn’t keep choosing between rent and food, and that her son deserved more than survival. With no family or safety net, I took him in and began guardianship proceedings. Every night, he asked, “Is Mama coming back?” and I always told him, “Mama loves you so much.” Months later, I enrolled him in preschool and celebrated his 5th birthday. Then a stranger commented on a video, “Does he still need the hallway light on?”—something only his mother would know. I messaged her privately, and months later she appeared at his kindergarten graduation, quietly crying from the back row. She left him a stuffed bear and a note: “I’m getting better. Thank you for not letting him forget me.” Today, she’s in trade school, and they text every week. He still doesn’t know the truth, but when the time is right, she’ll be ready. Sometimes love means keeping someone alive in a child’s heart until they’re ready to meet again…
