In 2021, zookeepers at Kujukushima Zoo and Botanical Garden in Nagasaki, Japan, were baffled when Momo, a 12-year-old female white-handed gibbon, gave birth despite living without a male companion in her enclosure. The mystery remained unsolved for years because Momo fiercely protected her baby, making DNA testing difficult. Eventually, tests identified the father as Itō, a 34-year-old male gibbon housed in a neighboring enclosure.
