How To Pick The Best Fruits At The Grocery Store

The Watermelon Lottery
Buying fresh fruit can feel like a high-stakes gamble, especially when a promising pick turns out to be mealy or sour. Watermelons are particularly mysterious, but you can beat the odds by looking for a “field spot”—the pale blotch where the melon rested on the ground. A creamy, golden-yellow or even orange-yellow spot means it fully ripened in the sun, whereas a whitish spot means it was picked too soon.

Another excellent indicator is the brown, spider-web-like scarring known as webbing. This texture shows that bees heavily pollinated the flower, which biologically yields a much sweeter melon; more webbing directly correlates to a sweeter taste. Additionally, keep an eye on the shape: rounder melons (often called “girls”) tend to be noticeably sweeter, while oblong ones (“boys”) are usually more watery.

Finally, always inspect the tail or stem before buying. A green stem indicates the melon was harvested prematurely, while a dried, brown tail proves it had ample time to mature and sweeten on the vine. To win the fruit roulette, bypass the biggest or shiniest options and choose a heavy, average-sized melon with a deep yellow field spot, plenty of webbing, and a dried-up stem.
