A Secret from the Grave
The funeral director, Earl, approached me by my mother’s grave and whispered something shocking: my mother had not been buried there, as he had been paid to lower a completely empty coffin into the ground. Before slipping away, he pressed a brass key into my hand for a storage unit named “Safelock Storage,” Unit 16. In that exact moment, my phone lit up with a text message from my mother’s number—despite her having been officially dead for six days and me having identified her body myself—which simply read: “Come home alone.”
The Trap at the Storage Unit
Terrified and confused, I drove straight to storage Unit 16, where inside I found only a chair, a lantern, and my mother’s navy handbag along with an envelope stating that they had lied to me. Suddenly, I heard footsteps outside and the voice of Richard Hale, my mother’s boss of nineteen years, demanding I open the door and telling me my mother was dead because she had stopped cooperating. Following the quick instructions in her note, I grabbed a red folder filled with secret documents and escaped through a hidden tear in the back fence that my mother had prepared as an escape route.
Uncovering the Truth
After I escaped, another text from her number directed me to go to Daniel Brooks at the County Recorder’s Office, who handed me another letter written by my mother weeks prior. It explained that her company had been stealing client money, and when she discovered it, Hale framed her and threatened our lives; therefore, she staged her own death with the help of a corrupt deputy coroner so Hale would stop searching long enough for me to deliver the evidence to the authorities. My mother was still alive and hiding under federal protection until the case was resolved.
Justice and Forgiveness
Thanks to the evidence we found on the USB drive and in the red folder, federal agents arrested Richard Hale and his associates within forty-eight hours. Months later, after the danger had passed, my mother came back home, and we sat together to talk about the immense pain that terrible staging had caused me. Although I was still hurt that she had let me mourn her fake death, I accepted her apology, realizing that her extreme choices had deeply pained me, but in the end, they saved our lives.
