Consuming fruit contaminated with this fungus can lead to unpleasant health complications, particularly for individuals with sensitive digestive systems or specific allergies. Inhaling or ingesting the mold spores can trigger respiratory irritation, coughing, or sudden allergic reactions. Furthermore, certain molds can produce hidden, harmful toxins that seep into the surrounding moisture, meaning washing the surface of the fruit with plain water is simply not enough to make it safe.
To prevent this phenomenon from ruining your groceries, it is crucial to inspect your berries immediately after purchasing them. Always discard any heavily molded fruit right away, and wash the remaining healthy-looking strawberries in a gentle mixture of water and white vinegar to kill hidden spores. Most importantly, ensure the berries are dried completely with a paper towel before storing them in a well-ventilated container, as eliminating excess moisture is the single best way to keep your fruit fresh.
