Former All-Pro pass rusher Aldon Smith has died at age 36, the San Francisco 49ers announced. Selected seventh overall in the 2011 NFL Draft, Smith quickly became one of the NFL’s most promising defenders, recording 14 sacks as a rookie and 19.5 sacks the following season while earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors. His career was later disrupted by legal and substance-abuse issues, though he made a notable comeback with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, recording five sacks after years away from football. The 49ers remembered Smith for both his extraordinary talent and his infectious personality, as a promising career ended far too soon.
