While supervising a six-man work crew at a cemetery in Polk County, Georgia, a sheriff’s deputy collapsed from heat exhaustion and lost consciousness. Instead of taking advantage of the situation to escape, all six inmates immediately rushed to his aid, removing his heavy ballistic vest to cool him down and using his cellphone to dial 911 for emergency medical help. Deeply grateful for their life-saving actions and the remarkable trust displayed, Sheriff Johnny Moats rewarded the inmates with a 25% reduction in their remaining prison sentences, while the deputy’s family hosted a celebratory park lunch in their honor.
