Eric Hilliard “Ricky” Nelson, who grew up before millions on his family’s hit sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet before becoming a legendary rock-and-roll teen idol, tragically died at age 45 alongside his companion Helen Blair and five band members when his Douglas DC-3 crashed during an emergency landing in De Kalb, Texas, on New Year’s Eve in 1985. The plane caught fire in flight following repeated difficulties with the cabin heater, though NTSB investigators found no evidence supporting sensational rumors that drug use caused the blaze. Remarkably, his 18-year-old twin sons, Matthew and Gunnar—who later became successful musicians themselves—were originally supposed to be on the flight, but Rick spared their lives by making a last-minute decision telling them to fly separately and meet him in Dallas instead.
