One Movie Role Changed His Life Forever, But What He Did After The Cameras Stopped Rolling Is Even More Inspiring… See more

In 1974, teenager Gary Sinise helped start a small theater company before finding success in Hollywood. His life changed in 1994 when he played Lieutenant Dan, a veteran who lost both legs in *Forrest Gump*. The role earned him an Oscar nomination and connected him deeply with the pain of real-world soldiers.

After September 11, 2001, Sinise began visiting military hospitals. Wounded soldiers did not know his real name; they only called him Lieutenant Dan. Realizing his Hollywood fame could help real people, he started playing free concerts on military bases with his cover band to boost morale.

In 2011, he started the Gary Sinise Foundation. For years, he balanced a busy schedule filming his hit TV show *CSI: NY* while touring bases. By 2019, he walked away from acting completely to focus on building custom, mortgage-free smart homes for severely injured veterans.

By late 2025, his foundation completed its 100th custom home for a retired Army Sergeant. Over the years, the organization has raised more than $300 million and served over a million meals. Sinise proved that a famous movie role could be turned into a lifelong mission to help others.
