For 45 Years, His Friends Laughed At His “Useless” Daily Habit. But In 2015, This Louisiana Man Rolled Up To The Bank With… See more

For 45 years, Otha Anders from Ruston, Louisiana, dropped every spare penny he received into large plastic water jugs in his garage. He started the habit in 1970 as a personal reminder to stay thankful, ignoring anyone who laughed at his collection.

Every evening after work, he emptied his pockets into the growing stash. He committed to never spending his pocket change, turning the simple routine into a lifelong tradition that required remarkable patience.

In October 2015, after filling fifteen 5-gallon jugs with over half a million pennies, Anders took them to the Ruston Origin Bank to cash them in. It took five hours for the bank’s coin-counting machines to process the massive haul.

While viral stories claim the money funded his retirement or paid off his home, the actual total was $5,136.14. Anders used the well-earned savings to pay off a dental bill, proving that small, consistent habits can build up to something meaningful over time.
