In the summer of 1961, a poor, uneducated man named Clarence Earl Gideon was arrested for breaking into a pool hall in Florida. Too poor to afford an attorney, he asked the judge to appoint one for him. The judge refused because Florida law only provided free lawyers for death penalty cases, forcing Gideon to defend himself. He lost the trial and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Inside the prison library, Gideon spent his days reading law books and studying the Constitution. Despite having no formal legal training, he carefully wrote a five-page petition in pencil on prison paper. He mailed this handwritten letter directly to the United States Supreme Court, arguing that his basic constitutional rights had been violated.

Against all odds, the Supreme Court agreed to hear his case and appointed a brilliant lawyer to represent him. On March 18, 1963, the justices ruled unanimously in Gideon’s favor. This historic decision changed American law forever, guaranteeing that every poor person accused of a serious crime has the right to a free, court-appointed lawyer.

Five months later, Gideon received a new trial with a lawyer by his side. It took the jury just one hour to find him completely innocent of all charges. Gideon went back to a quiet, ordinary life and died in 1972, but his determination permanently changed the American justice system for millions of people.
