I’m a pawn shop owner. One afternoon, a woman walked in carrying a beautiful, expensive wedding dress over her arm—not even in a bag, like she’d just taken it off. She set it on the counter and asked, “How much?” I offered $80. She didn’t negotiate or say another word; she just nodded, signed the slip, and left.
Three months later, an older man walked into my shop. His hands were shaking as he looked at me and asked, “You got a wedding dress? Came in about three months ago?” I brought it out to show him, and he immediately pulled out exactly $80.
He looked at the dress and told me, “That’s my daughter’s. She sold it after her husband left her. She doesn’t know I’m here.” He bought back his daughter’s wedding dress with money I’m guessing he didn’t really have, took it, and went home.
I don’t know where he put it, or if she ever found it. But a father walked into a pawn shop and quietly reversed the worst day of his daughter’s year because he couldn’t reverse the worst day of her marriage. He bought back the dress she gave up on, just to make sure that when she was ready to believe in something again, the evidence would still be there.
