She Walked Into My Divorce Office. But She Didn’t Want Revenge.

I’m a divorce attorney. In my fifteen years of practicing family law, most clients who walk through my door want blood. They are angry, hurt, and looking to take everything they can get. But one woman came in, sat down across from my desk, and completely caught me off guard. She looked at me and said, “I want to make sure he’s okay.”

I stared at her in disbelief. “He left you,” I reminded her. She nodded quietly and replied, “I know. But he’s not good alone. He doesn’t cook. He forgets his prescriptions. I need the settlement to include enough that he doesn’t fall apart.”

I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I asked her, “You’re negotiating on behalf of the person you’re separating from?”

She looked at me with complete sincerity and said, “I’m separating from a husband. I’m not separating from a human being.” In over a decade and a half of handling bitter separations, she remains the only client I have ever had who actively protected the person on the other side.
