My brother and I inherited our parents’ house, but we don’t get along. We haven’t in years. We live completely different lives, hold entirely different values, and disagree on just about everything. He wanted to sell the property immediately, while I desperately wanted to keep it. We argued bitterly for months, and eventually, expensive lawyers got involved.
Then, everything changed when I was cleaning out the attic and stumbled upon an old photograph. It was a picture of the two of us, maybe four and six years old, playing out in the backyard. In the photo, he’s tightly holding my hand, and I’m proudly wielding a tree stick like it’s a sword. We looked absolutely invincible together.
I immediately called him and said, “I found something. Come look.” To my surprise, he drove three hours to get here. We went up and sat in the dusty attic with the old photograph placed gently between us. For a long time, nobody talked about the house or the legal battle.
Instead, he looked at the picture and said, “You had that stick for years. You carried it everywhere.” I looked at him and replied, “You held my hand so I wouldn’t trip.” We decided to keep the house. It wasn’t because our deep arguments were suddenly resolved, but because a single photograph reminded two grown men that they were once a team, and neither of them could bring themselves to sell the evidence.
