A Nest Of Odd-Looking Spotted Creatures Turned Into… See more

A group of researchers in Australia is thrilled after their efforts to propagate the species seem to have succeeded.

Recently, ecologists at the Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary in Australia made a stunning discovery.

In the sanctuary, they found a litter of newborn and independent little creatures running around the bush.

But these are not just any creatures. They belong to the species “western quolls,” which are a specific type of marsupial carnivore.

Previously, the species was scattered throughout nearly 70% of mainland Australia, but feral predators pushed them to the brink.

This incredible event marks the very first time the rare marsupials have successfully bred to independence in the area in over 100 years.

The breakthrough was discovered when ecologists noticed bait was missing from their monitoring traps, yet the doors remained open.

Motion-sensor cameras revealed that tiny, newly-born quolls were slipping into the traps, eating the food, and sliding right back out.

By analyzing the unique white spot patterns on their brown fur, scientists confirmed the juveniles were entirely new sanctuary residents.

The research team celebrated the historical milestone by naming the four clever young quolls after classic Australian biscuits: Tim Tam, Oreo, Monte, and Tiny Teddy.
