Adult Indian meal moths measure roughly eight to ten millimeters in length and feature distinct reddish-brown or copper outer wings.

Interestingly, adult moths do not consume your food due to non-functional mouthparts; the actual structural damage is caused entirely by their larval stage.

If the pests lack wings, you are likely dealing with flour beetles or rice weevils, which bore tiny holes directly into individual kernels.

In tightly sealed commercial packaging, infestations usually begin long before purchase when microscopic eggs survive agricultural processing and sit dormant inside the bag.

Alternatively, strong moth larvae can easily chew their way into thin paper, cardboard, or plastic packaging during transit or warehouse storage.

Fortunately, entomologists confirm that pantry moths, their larvae, and their eggs do not pose a direct threat to human health or transmit disease.

However, their feeding habits severely degrade food quality by secreting fluids and leaving behind metabolic waste, cast-off skins, and sticky webbing.

To eradicate them, empty the pantry entirely, discard compromised goods outdoors, vacuum all shelf crevices thoroughly, and wash surfaces with a warm vinegar solution.
