Eli Thompson was born in Alabama with complete congenital arhinia, an extremely rare condition that left him without a nose or nasal cavities, requiring a tracheotomy shortly after birth to help him breathe. Although doctors discussed possible facial reconstruction, his parents chose not to put him through cosmetic surgery, believing Eli was perfect as he was and that any decision to have a nose created should be his when he was old enough to choose. Rather than focusing on his differences, they wanted to raise him knowing that he did not need to look like everyone else to be loved, accepted, and valued.
