Warmer weather means spending more time outdoors, but it also increases the chances of encountering insects. While mosquitoes and ticks are familiar nuisances, another insect occasionally makes headlines—the assassin bug.

The name sounds alarming, but it’s important to understand that the assassin bug family includes many different species. Most are beneficial predators that feed on other insects and pose little threat to people. Only a small group known as kissing bugs (triatomine bugs) can carry the parasite responsible for Chagas disease.

Knowing how to identify these insects, avoid contact, and respond to a bite can help you stay safe without unnecessary worry.

Assassin bugs belong to the insect family Reduviidae, which includes thousands of species found around the world. Most species hunt and feed on insects, making them valuable in gardens because they naturally reduce pest populations.

The insects commonly referred to as kissing bugs belong to a specific subgroup called Triatominae. Unlike other assassin bugs, these insects feed on the blood of mammals, including humans.
