A rubber band left on a front door handle can serve as a disturbing signal used by potential burglars scouting your home.
Criminals use the rubber band as a discreet physical marker to identify properties they perceive as vulnerable or easy targets for theft.
Beyond acting as a mark, a rubber band wrapped tightly around a latch handle can physically depress the latch mechanism to prevent the door from locking properly.
When you turn the key, the door may fail to latch securely, leaving your entry unlocked and easily accessible to intruders.
If you find a rubber band on your door handle, remove it immediately and carefully check that your lock and latch mechanism are fully engaged.
You should thoroughly inspect your entryways for other unusual markings, smudges, or taped latches that could compromise your door’s security.
Inform your neighbors and local community groups about the incident so others in your area can stay vigilant against potential scouting.
If the item reappears or you notice suspicious individuals lingering nearby, document the evidence with a photo and contact local police via their non-emergency line.
Enhancing your home security with deadbolts, bright motion-sensor lighting, and a visible video doorbell provides a strong physical deterrent against potential intruders.
