When a bird sits on a single power line, both of its feet are touching the same wire. This means both feet are at almost the same electrical voltage.
Because there is no significant voltage difference across the bird’s body, electricity does not travel through it.
Instead, the electricity continues flowing through the metal wire, which is a much better conductor than the bird’s body.
When Birds Can Get Electrocuted
Birds are not immune to electricity.
They can be harmed if they touch two points with different electrical voltages at the same time.
For example, if a bird touches one power line while also touching another wire, a pole, or a grounded object, electricity can pass through its body.
This is one reason why large birds such as eagles and owls are sometimes affected by electrical equipment.
Why Humans Cannot Do the Same
Humans usually cannot safely sit on a power line because our bodies are connected to the ground or other objects.
If a person touches an energized wire while also touching the ground, electricity can travel through the body to complete the circuit.
Electrical workers who work near power lines use specialized equipment and strict safety procedures to prevent this.

Birds sitting on power lines are not protected by special abilities or feathers.
