# How to Make an Easy DIY Jewelry Cleaner Using Everyday Household Ingredients

Keeping your jewelry clean and shiny doesn’t have to require expensive cleaning products or professional polishing services. Over time, metals such as sterling silver, brass, and other jewelry materials naturally develop tarnish as they react with air, moisture, and everyday wear. This buildup can make your favorite pieces appear dull or discolored, but a simple homemade cleaning solution made from common household ingredients can often restore their original shine quickly and affordably.

To make this DIY jewelry cleaner, you’ll need hot water, baking soda, table salt, liquid dish soap, and a small piece of aluminum foil. Line a bowl with the aluminum foil, placing the shiny side facing upward, then fill the bowl with very hot water. Add one tablespoon each of baking soda, salt, and dish soap, stirring until the ingredients dissolve. Carefully place your tarnished jewelry on the foil so it is completely submerged in the cleaning solution.

As the jewelry soaks for about five to ten minutes, a gentle chemical reaction occurs between the aluminum foil, baking soda, and the tarnish on the metal. This process helps lift oxidation and discoloration without the need for vigorous scrubbing, making it an effective method for many types of jewelry. After soaking, rinse each piece thoroughly with cool water and dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth to reveal a cleaner, brighter finish.

This homemade cleaning method is suitable for many metals, including sterling silver, gold-filled jewelry, brass, and German silver. However, it may not be appropriate for delicate gemstones, pearls, opals, or jewelry with glued settings, which can require specialized care. By cleaning your jewelry regularly and storing it properly, you can help preserve its shine, extend its lifespan, and keep your favorite pieces looking beautiful for years to come.
