At just 20, Bittu Tabahi in Biaora, India, couldn’t swim but still entered the polluted Ajnar River on Republic Day to begin cleaning it with his bare hands. Although friends eventually stopped helping and he suffered skin infections, Bittu continued for weeks, later using about $350 he raised with teammates to buy tools and containers and turn religious waste into compost, determined to restore the river his community had neglected.
