Motorist Convinced ‘99% of Drivers’ Don’t Know What This Sign Means

### **Motorist Convinced ‘99% of Drivers’ Don’t Know What This Sign Means**

Many UK drivers recognize the round white road sign with a thick black diagonal stripe, but surprisingly, not everyone remembers what it actually means. A social media post sparked debate after a motorist claimed that “99% of drivers” misunderstand the sign, with commenters offering humorous guesses ranging from “drive as fast as you want” to “national drifting zone.” While the jokes were entertaining, they highlighted how easy it is to forget important road signs after passing the driving test.

The sign is officially the **National Speed Limit** sign. It indicates that any previous posted speed limit—such as a temporary restriction through roadworks—has ended, and drivers should now follow the national speed limit that applies to the type of road and vehicle they are driving. Importantly, the sign does **not** mean there is one fixed speed limit for everyone; the permitted speed depends on both the road and the vehicle.

For cars in the UK, the national speed limit is generally **60 mph on single carriageways** and **70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways**. However, different limits apply to vans, larger vehicles, and those towing trailers or caravans, which are usually restricted to lower speeds. In built-up areas with street lighting, the default speed limit is typically **30 mph** unless otherwise indicated by signs.

Although the national speed limit sign tells drivers the maximum legal speed for that road, it does not mean they should always drive at that speed. Weather conditions, visibility, traffic, and road layout should always influence how fast it is safe to travel. Responsible driving means understanding road signs, following the law, and adjusting your speed whenever conditions require, even when the national speed limit is in effect.
