Who Was Deep Throat? The Secret FBI Insider Who Helped Expose Watergate

**Who Was Deep Throat? The Secret FBI Insider Who Helped Expose Watergate**

For decades, one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the Watergate scandal was the identity of “Deep Throat,” the anonymous source who secretly provided information to *The Washington Post* reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. The mystery was finally solved in 2005 when former FBI official Mark Felt revealed that he was the person behind the famous nickname.

Mark Felt was the second-highest-ranking official at the FBI during the Watergate investigation. After being passed over for FBI director following J. Edgar Hoover’s death, Felt became increasingly concerned about the Nixon administration’s attempts to interfere with the investigation. His insider knowledge allowed him to provide crucial information while remaining hidden in the shadows.

Felt secretly met with Woodward and helped guide the reporters as they uncovered details about the Watergate break-in, a scandal that eventually led President Richard Nixon to resign in 1974. To protect his identity, Woodward and Felt used secret communication methods, including hidden meetings and coded signals.

For more than 30 years, Felt denied being Deep Throat, but at age 91 he finally admitted the truth, saying, “I’m the guy they used to call Deep Throat.” Mark Felt died in 2008, leaving behind a complicated legacy as both a controversial FBI figure and the mysterious source who helped change American history.
