On May 18, 2026, following torrential rain in Shanghongyan Village, Yunnan, China, 56-year-old village leader Tian Ruliang went door-to-door at 3 a.m. to evacuate 21 households. Although temporarily swept away by mud before grabbing a tree to free himself, an exhausted and sludge-covered Tian continued helping residents reach safety just minutes before a massive landslide buried parts of the village, ensuring all 60 residents survived and earning him viral fame as the “Mud Buddha.”
