In the small grocery store where I worked, a pregnant woman used to come in late at night. She was always quiet, meticulously double-checking the price of every single item on the shelves before deciding what she could actually afford to keep.
The cashier, a middle-aged man who usually seemed completely indifferent to the customers, started quietly setting aside unredeemed discount stickers before she even reached the counter. As a younger coworker, I noticed what he was doing, but I didn’t question it.
One night, the store was quiet when her card got declined. She stood there frozen, staring at the terminal longer than usual, her face falling as embarrassment took over. Without drawing any attention or making a scene, the cashier calmly took her items back and scanned a few of them again under completely different employee pricing codes. She was so flustered she didn’t even notice what he had done until she was already walking out the automatic doors with bags she hadn’t expected to keep.
The next time she came in, she hesitated noticeably less at the shelves. The cashier never acknowledged the pattern, and he never spoke a word to her about that night. But from then on, the checkout line started moving completely differently whenever she appeared. Other customers never seemed to notice anything unusual happening, but we knew.
