Passengers are usually frantic, and gate agents are strictly bound by rigid company rules regarding luggage sizes and fees. One evening, an elderly woman carrying a frayed, clearly oversized canvas bag was stopped right before stepping onto the jet bridge.
The agent informed her that her bag exceeded the limits and she would have to pay a steep gate-check fee. The woman’s face turned pale. She didn’t get angry or demand to speak to a manager; she just quietly clutched the bag closer to her chest, her hands trembling as she whispered that she simply didn’t have the money with her.
The line behind her began to grow restless, with people sighing loudly and checking their watches. The gate agent, a woman known for being incredibly strict and no-nonsense, looked down at her computer screen for a long moment. Instead of calling security or forcing the woman out of line, she calmly pulled out her own personal credit card, swiped it through the terminal, and printed out the baggage tag.
She attached it to the canvas bag, handed the woman her boarding pass, and gave her a warm smile, telling her to have a wonderful flight. The elderly woman tried to find words to thank her, tears welling up in her eyes, but the agent just tapped her mic and called for the next group to board as if nothing extraordinary had just happened.
