A 22-year-old woman from Northern Ireland died just five days after developing what she believed was a simple sore throat, highlighting how, in rare cases, common symptoms can become life-threatening if left untreated.

According to reports, her condition quickly worsened with severe throat pain, difficulty swallowing, a high fever, and extreme fatigue. When she finally sought medical help, doctors diagnosed her with a **peritonsillar abscess**, a serious bacterial infection that had dangerously narrowed her airway.

Medical experts say a peritonsillar abscess is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of tonsillitis. Without prompt treatment, it can lead to airway blockage, sepsis, and other severe complications.

Doctors urge people to seek immediate medical attention if a sore throat is accompanied by severe difficulty swallowing, trouble breathing, persistent high fever, worsening neck swelling, or signs of a serious infection such as confusion, extreme weakness, or a rapid heartbeat.
