Pai Lin, an Asian elephant who spent roughly six decades performing logging, begging, and tourist work—including 25 years carrying heavy howdahs for tourists in Thailand—became an international symbol for animal welfare after arriving at the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) with a severely deformed, sunken spine. Although her physical damage was permanent, her rescue around 2006–2007 provided her with nearly two decades of peaceful retirement, natural foraging, and sanctuary care until her death in December 2025 at nearly 80 years old. Her story highlights that an animal’s calm appearance or immense strength does not exempt them from long-term physical strain, urging future travelers to look beyond brief tourist encounters and carefully evaluate the welfare practices behind wildlife attractions.
