The Boy Who Became the “Unabomber”: The Troubling Story of Theodore Kaczynski

As a child, Theodore Kaczynski was viewed as exceptionally intelligent, but family accounts later revealed signs of anger, isolation, and emotional struggles that raised questions about his early life. Relatives described a gifted young man who often withdrew from others and had difficult relationships with those closest to him.

Kaczynski became one of the most infamous criminals in American history after authorities identified him as the “Unabomber,” a suspect in a series of mail bombings that killed three people and injured more than 20 others over nearly two decades. His crimes led to one of the longest FBI investigations in the United States.

Despite his violent actions, Kaczynski’s background was complex. He was a child prodigy with a reported high IQ, studied at Harvard University, earned a doctorate in mathematics, and briefly taught at the University of California, Berkeley before abandoning modern society to live alone in a remote cabin in Montana.

After his arrest in 1996, investigators uncovered writings and evidence that revealed his deep anger toward society and his extreme beliefs. His case remains one of the most disturbing examples of how extraordinary intelligence can exist alongside destructive and dangerous behavior.
