Dana Finley Morrison, a Missouri fraternity and sorority worker, spotted a “Let’s Go Brandon” sticker on a pilot’s crew luggage while boarding an American Airlines flight from St. Lucia to Miami. The slogan is widely recognized as a coded anti-Biden phrase that originated from a NASCAR event where chants of “F*** Joe Biden” were misheard by a reporter. Morrison publicly complained on Twitter, calling the display “cowardly rhetoric” and asking whether the airline approved of pilots showing such messages while in uniform.
American Airlines replied that it holds employees to high standards and opened an investigation into the pilot. Company policy allows only official, preapproved badges or pins, and pilots are limited to three pins at a time. The airline told Morrison it would forward the matter to the appropriate team.
The airline’s response triggered strong online backlash. Critics accused American Airlines of hypocrisy, noting that in 2020 the company had explicitly permitted staff to wear Black Lives Matter pins as a show of solidarity with racial-justice causes. Many commenters argued that if progressive political or social messaging was allowed, a conservative slogan on luggage should not be treated differently.
Supporters of the pilot insisted he had done nothing wrong by displaying a personal political opinion on his own bag and that passengers should not police such expressions. Some threatened to stop flying American Airlines if the pilot faced discipline, framing the issue as one of free speech and consistency in the company’s political-neutrality rules.
