At 64 years old, João Stanganelli of Bragança Paulista, Brazil, transformed his experience with vitiligo—a skin condition he has had since age 38—into an empowering movement for representation after learning to crochet alongside his wife, Marilena, to make a doll for his newborn granddaughter who inherited the same condition. His first creation, a doll with matching white patches named “Vitilinda,” took five days to make and inspired a broader inclusive project where he now crafts dolls featuring vitiligo, psoriasis, alopecia, blindness, motor disabilities, and diverse body types so that no child feels alone in front of the mirror. Driven by his belief that his skin spots are beautiful while “the spots in people’s character” are what truly hurt, João has built a meaningful project that sustains his life while fostering self-acceptance for children with diverse physical traits….
