After vanishing following a family holiday to Spain in 2017 at age 11, Alex Batty spent six years living in alternative spiritual communes across Spain and France with his mother and grandfather, who lacked legal custody. In December 2023, a 17-year-old Alex escaped by hiking through the Pyrenees mountains for four days in the pouring rain, where he was picked up by a French delivery driver and uttered the harrowing words, “My mother kidnapped me.” Although police launched an investigation upon his return to the UK, the case was closed without arrests in January 2025 due to Alex’s persistent refusal to see his family jailed and a lack of cooperative witness evidence for prosecution.
