The Rev. Jesse Jackson, one of America’s most influential civil rights leaders, has died at the age of 84. A longtime advocate for racial justice, economic equality, and human rights, Jackson passed away peacefully in Chicago, surrounded by his family after years of battling Parkinson’s disease.

Born on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson rose from humble beginnings to become a protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After King’s assassination in 1968, he emerged as one of the most recognizable voices of the Civil Rights Movement, dedicating his life to fighting discrimination and expanding opportunities for marginalized communities.

In 1971, Jackson founded People United to Save Humanity (Operation PUSH), later expanding it into the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. He also made history by running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, becoming one of the first Black candidates to mount a serious national campaign. Throughout his career, he championed voting rights, education, and social justice while helping secure the release of hostages in several international diplomatic missions.

Tributes poured in from political leaders, activists, and public figures across the United States, praising Jackson’s decades-long commitment to justice and equality. His legacy will be remembered as one of courage, perseverance, and hope, inspiring generations to continue the fight for civil rights and human dignity.
