He Thought It Was Just A Harmless Bump On His Toe, Until Doctors Told Him… See more

The rough, thickened skin on the side of the pinky toe is typically a corn or callus caused by repeated friction and pressure. When the outer layer of skin faces constant rubbing, it hardens into a protective barrier to defend the underlying tissue.

Ill-fitting footwear is the primary culprit behind this condition. Tight shoes, narrow toe boxes, or high heels compress the toes together, forcing the pinky toe to rub constantly against the inner wall of the shoe.

To prevent this buildup, switch to supportive shoes with a wide toe box that gives your toes plenty of room to wiggle. Using protective gel pads or corn cushions can also help relieve pressure and prevent further irritation.

Treating existing corns or calluses involves soaking the foot in warm water and gently filing the hardened skin with a pumice stone. Over-the-counter salicylic acid pads can help soften the tough skin, but persistent or painful lesions should be evaluated by a podiatrist.
