When my girlfriend returned from a dog walk, she noticed something strange tangled deep in his fur. It looked like a spiked sea creature or a tiny alien. Neither of us could tell if it was a plant, insect, or animal, but it was firmly clinging to his coat.
A local wildlife expert identified it as a “hitchhiker” plant seed, like a grass awn or barbed seed head. These seeds are designed to hook onto passing animals to travel to new locations and grow.
However, the expert warned that these seeds can be dangerous if ignored. Their sharp barbs can work their way into a pet’s skin, ears, nose, or paws, so we thoroughly inspected our dog to make sure he was clear.
What seemed like a bizarre creature was just a clever plant strategy. It was a great reminder to always check pets after walks through tall grass, as strange discoveries are often just seeds catching a ride.
