Experts Warn About a Serious Long-Term Effect

Marijuana is often associated with relaxation, altered perception, increased appetite and other short-term effects. But when cannabis is regularly smoked, the lungs are repeatedly exposed to hot smoke, fine particles and irritating substances. The effects may not always be obvious at first, which can make respiratory problems easy to overlook.

With repeated exposure, the airways can become irritated and inflamed. Some frequent smokers may develop symptoms such as coughing, increased mucus production or wheezing. Smoking can also interfere with the lungs’ natural ability to clear mucus and particles, potentially allowing irritants to remain in the respiratory tract for longer.

This does not mean that everyone who uses marijuana will develop permanent lung disease. The potential effects depend on factors such as how often someone smokes, how long they have smoked, their overall health and whether they also use tobacco. Persistent coughing, wheezing, chest discomfort or difficulty breathing should not simply be dismissed.

The main concern highlighted by the simulation is that regularly smoking marijuana can contribute to respiratory irritation and chronic-bronchitis-like symptoms over time. The important takeaway is simple: cannabis smoke is still smoke, and repeated inhalation can place stress on the respiratory system—even when the effects aren’t immediately noticeable.
