Henry Winkler Shared Memories of Working With a Co-Star Who Left a Lasting Impression

For millions of viewers, Happy Days remains one of the most beloved sitcoms in American television history. Henry Winkler, who became famous as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, recently reflected on his years on the series during a panel at Fanboy Expo Knoxville, alongside former co-stars Anson Williams and Don Most. He described a production where teamwork and mutual respect were generally more important than fame.

At the height of its popularity, Happy Days reportedly attracted around 50 million viewers a week. Despite that enormous success, Winkler said the regular cast generally avoided treating popularity as a competition. However, he recalled one guest actor who repeatedly talked about the large amount of fan mail he was receiving. Winkler eventually reminded him that the set was supposed to be about collaboration rather than comparing levels of fame.

Winkler initially did not reveal the actor’s identity but later said the performer had played the character Eugene. Entertainment reports connected the description to Denis Mandel, who portrayed Eugene Belvin in ten episodes between 1980 and 1982. Winkler also recalled a very different lesson involving Ron Howard, who played Richie Cunningham. After Winkler became frustrated with a script, Howard privately reminded him to respect the writers who had worked hard to create it—an experience Winkler said stayed with him for years.

The bigger story behind Winkler’s memories is not the identity of one guest actor, but the lesson he took from his time on Happy Days: success should never become an excuse to look down on others. More than five decades later, the series remains a television classic, while Winkler continues to work and says he has never seriously wanted to retire. For him, the lasting legacy of Happy Days is not only its fame and unforgettable characters, but also the importance of humility, teamwork and respect behind the scenes.
