In a widely reported 2017 Florida court case, police officer and detective confronted 21-year-old Kevin Rojas at his sentencing after Rojas had been convicted of attempting to kill the officer and firing at him while he was riding in an unmarked vehicle with his son. During the hearing, the officer told Rojas he had brought him a “gift” for prison and handed him a bottle of KY lubricant, prompting the judge to question the stunt and the officer’s supervisors to address the incident. Rojas was ultimately sentenced to life in prison after convictions including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, while the officer’s controversial courtroom taunt drew both praise and criticism from the public.
