Former NASA astronaut Ron Garan said seeing Earth from space gave him a profound new perspective on humanity and the planet. After spending 178 days in space and completing thousands of orbits, Garan described the “overview effect,” saying he was struck by the incredibly thin atmosphere that protects every living thing on Earth. From orbit, he said, national borders, conflicts and economic systems seemed insignificant compared with the fragile planet we all share. His experience led him to argue that humanity has become too focused on economic interests while overlooking the natural systems that sustain life, inspiring him to advocate for environmental protection and global cooperation.
