Keeping snakes away from your yard starts with making the area less attractive to them. Remove food sources such as fallen fruit, birdseed, pet food and unsecured trash, while reducing rodents and insects. Keep grass and weeds trimmed, clear leaves and debris, store firewood neatly off the ground, and seal gaps around doors, foundations, pipes and utility lines that could provide entry. Scent-based remedies like citrus, cinnamon or clove are not guaranteed, and potentially harmful products such as mothballs should be avoided unless specifically used according to their label. If you encounter a snake, keep your distance and never try to handle an unfamiliar species; give it space or contact a qualified wildlife professional if necessary.
