A Wisconsin mother is warning other parents after her 10-month-old daughter, Esther Johanna Faith Bethard, died in 2023 after swallowing a water bead from a Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kit. According to the family’s lawsuit, the bead expanded inside the baby’s body and caused a fatal intestinal blockage, despite the toy having previously been used under adult supervision. The family later sued Target, alleging the retailer failed to adequately warn customers about reported dangers, while Target expressed sympathy and said it could not comment further because of the ongoing legal case. About two months after Esther’s death, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled roughly 52,000 of the kits over risks including intestinal obstruction, choking and death.
