Alex Simpson, a Nebraska woman diagnosed with the extremely rare brain condition hydranencephaly as an infant, has celebrated her 20th birthday after doctors once warned her parents that she might not survive beyond age 4. The condition left Alex with much of her brain absent and replaced by fluid, yet she defied those early expectations and reached adulthood. Her family describes her as highly responsive to the people around her and considers her survival a remarkable journey of strength and perseverance.
