The young boy pictured at 15 was Charles Manson, who grew up amid neglect, crime and repeated stays in reform schools before becoming a manipulative cult leader. After years of criminal behavior and failed attempts to pursue a music career, Manson gathered a group of followers known as the Manson Family and developed an apocalyptic, racist ideology. In 1969, members of his group carried out the murders of actress Sharon Tate and several others, as well as Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Manson was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, where he remained until his death from cardiac arrest related to colon cancer in 2017, aged 83.
